Apple may launch its iPhone 12 lineup in South Korea earlier than usual this year in order to take advantage of the country’s existing 5G services and users. The latest report by The Korea Herald claims that,
“Apple Inc. is expected to launch its new iPhone 12 series in South Korea earlier than its usual schedule, sources said Monday, as the U.S. tech titan targets to attract more 5G users here.
According to officials at local telecom operators, they are preparing to sell the iPhone 12 in late October or early November.”
The news is not surprising because South Korea is the first country that commercialized 5G telecommunications in April 2019. Since then, the country already has approximately eight million 5G users. South Korea is expected to be a key market for the Cupertino tech giant since the iPhone 12 lineup will be the first with 5G network support.
Upcoming iPhone 12 to launch in South Korea
In past years, new iPhone models have arrived in South Korea about one month after they went on sale in other countries. However, this year will be different as local telecom sources are telling The Korea Herald that Apple could release new 5G-enabled models in the country early, around late October or early November.
Additionally, South Korea may be one of a handful of countries to get access to new iPhone models equipped with faster mmWave service. TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that all four iPhone 12 models will get 5G compatibility, but only those sold in certain countries will get mmWave.
According to the report, Apple’s iPhone 12 may also be the first smartphone in the country to support the faster 5G spectrum since none of Samsung’s 5G devices currently do.
Along with 5G support, the upcoming flagship iPhone lineup will be powered by the A14 Bionic chip for faster performance and reduced power consumption for longer battery life. It will have a new design language with flat edges and 2020 iPad Pro like curves, smaller notch, and an OLED display. The higher-end models are speculated to have four-lens camera systems with LiDAR sensor, 120 Hz refresh rate, and more. However, there are recent claims that the 120Hz display will not be shipped in the 2020 models of the upcoming iPhone series.
Although Apple hasn’t announced a second fall keynote event, several rumors suggest that an iPhone 12 launch event will take place in October. According to leaker Jon Prosser, the keynote could be slated for October 13, with new models shipping October 23.
