According to a recent report, the smallest model in the iPhone 12 line-up, iPhone 12 mini, only accounted for 5% of sales for the entire 2020 iPhone series in the first half of January 2021 in the U.S.
Apple shipped its iPhone 12 line-up several weeks later than usual last year due to COVID-19 pandemic production disruptions. Despite the late launch and low consumer spending due to the global health crisis, the new sizes and design of the lineup sparked demand in consumers for upgrades, especially in China.
iPhone 12 mini accounted for just 5% of sales in the first half of January
According to Counterpoint Research cited by Reuters, indicates that handsets over 6 inches like the iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max outperformed smaller models such as the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini at the start of this year. Reuters says:
Apple Inc’s iPhone 12 mini U.S. sales were just 5% of overall sales of its new phones during the first half of January, industry data provider Counterpoint said on Tuesday, adding to signs of muted demand for the new smaller version of its flagship device.
This is only the latest report in a growing catalog of data indicating low demand for the iPhone 12 mini. The comparatively low sales for iPhone 12 mini might be due to a trend in the market where consumers are steering away from smaller displays and moving towards immersive and larger smartphones.
Last week, William Yang, JP Morgan analyst, stated in a note that weak demand for the model could end in Apple cutting production entirely in Q2 of 2021 to allow the device to sell through its existing supplies. Yang explained:
The product mix adjustment is well expected by investors and should not be a negative surprise. This is in line with what we’re seeing in the broader global market, where screens under 6-inches now account for around 10% share of all smartphones sold.
Even though the initial sales of iPhone 12 mini were weaker than expected, various analysts have said that sales of the iPhone 12 line-up as a whole are higher than expected. Because of the heavy demand for iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Apple no longer reports unit sales for any of its products. Because of this, we will never know the actual amount of the iPhone 12 mini units sold in comparison to the rest of the iPhone 12 line-up. The Cupertino tech giant reported its quarterly earnings for the first time since the launch of the iPhone 12 last year in October.
