iPhone 12 mini reviews are out: small, fast, beautiful display, but lackluster battery life

iPhone 12 mini reviews have started to come out and the general consensus from various publications is that it is a small beautiful device, with a gorgeous display, excellent cameras, and good build quality, however, due to its small size, its battery life is below par when compared to the rest of the iPhone 12 line-up.

The Verge is a favorite of iThinkDifferent when it comes to smartphone reviews, and the iPhone 12 mini review by Dieter Bohn is no different. He calls it his favorite iPhone, and considers it the best for most people. He praises the fact that it has the same features as its larger and more expensive siblings, but brings it all together in a small size.

For the first time in many years, Apple is making an intentionally small phone. The key, though, is that unlike other small phones, Apple isn’t putting worse parts in it. The iPhone 12 mini has all the same features as the larger iPhone 12. It has the same cameras, same processor, same everything save for two things: screen size and battery life.

Dieter gave the mini a respectable 8.5/10 rating in his review.

Engadget’s review shows a lot of love for the iPhone 12 mini. The review praises its beautiful screen, small design, and excellent performance, but finds the battery and slow MagSafe charging disappointing. The iPhone 12 mini charges at just 12W instead of 15W like its larger siblings, which makes it a better to just use a cable to charge it.

Engadget gave it a review score of 84/100.

The TechCrunch review by Matthew Panzarino calls the iPhone 12 mini ‘best value of any iPhone in years’, and we cannot help but agree. Matthew praised the design, weight, camera and performance of the phone, and even created a flowchart in his review to help users decide which one to buy. We agree with this excerpt from this review:

The iPhone mini is by far the best value per dollar in Apple’s 2020 lineup. With this you get all of the power and advances of the iPhone 12, everything but the telephoto camera (and 60fps/4k video) of the iPhone 12 Pro and everything but the new sensor in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Those additions will cost you anywhere from $300-$400 more over the life of your device if you choose to step up.

Wired reviewed the mini and called it a fun iPhone. Unlike the iPhone SE, and other cheaper flagships from competitors, it has everything going for it: performance, display, camera and wireless charging. Wired noted that the speakers and battery life are not as good as expected, and the smaller screen is not the best for watching videos.

It’s a baby iPhone. It’s fun to carry around. It’s easy to forget about. And unlike the small-ish iPhone SE, the iPhone 12 Mini has Apple’s newest chip, display, and camera system. Also: wireless charging.

Joanna Stern from the Wall Street Journal created a light hearted review in which she used puppet hands to make the iPhone 12 mini look bigger. The two minute review is fun, and goes through a size comparison between all iPhone 12 models, as well as their battery life comparison. iPhone 12 mini battery size has a 2227mAh capacity, which is much smaller than the other models.
