A new claim from Chinese leaker @PanadaIsBald states that the next-generation iPhone 14 series will not abandon the notch completely, and will feature a punch-hole display with the notch. Introduced in the iPhone X series, the notch houses several sensors and more importantly, support FaceID authentication. But the notch on the display, especially in landscape orientation, is irksome for some users which impacts the viewing experience.
Even before iPhone 13 series was launched, rumor mills reported that the redesigned iPhone 14 series will house the proximity sensor, ambient light, and other notch components under the display and feature the front camera via punch-hole technology. Credible sources like Jon Prosser, Ming-Chi Kuo, and Mark Gurman have all corroborated that iPhone 14 will come with a punch-hole display. A display analyst also supports the punch-hole display report. Kuo also claims that the future iPhone SE 3 will also feature a punch-hole display.
iPhone 14 will not feature under-display Touch ID and come with a notch and punch-hole display
MacRumors reports that the @PanadaIsBald posted the leak on Weibo and soon after deleted the post. the leaker claimed that Apple will continue with the notch design but with a smaller footprint, “it is unlikely that Apple will replace the notch entirely with a hole-punch cutout, and instead, the iPhone 14 may continue to feature a notch but with a smaller footprint.” In iPhone 13 series, Apple reduced the width of the notch but made it a little taller.
The leaker also added that under-display Touch ID tech will not debut in iPhone 14 series which means FaceID and passcode will be used as authentication methods. Apple is known for launching new features when it is certain that it will perform satisfactorily. Andriod manufacturers like Samsung and Oppo already feature punch-hole displays in certain smartphone models, but the camera quality is not up to mark. Maybe, with improvement in the punch-hole technology, the Cupertino tech giant will finally adopt it in upcoming iPhone models.
