Before the launch of the iPhone 13, it was reported that the 2021 iPhone series will feature a new Always-On display. Although the company did not introduce the display tech in iPhone 13, rumor mills expect it to launch this year in iPhone 14 Pro models.
To substantial those claims, MacRumors contributor Steve Moser has found hints of the alleged Always-On display tech in the latest Xcode 14 beta.
Like Apple Watch, the new iPhone 14 Pro might also feature an always-on display
On June 6, 2022, Apple released the latest Xcode 14 beta to developers which includes SDKs for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16.
Moser found that Xcode 14 beta includes a new Lock Screen interface for iOS 16 which functions like the Always-On display mode. It is expected that when the mode will be active on iPhone 14 Pro models, the details from the on-screen widgets will be removed from the Lock Screen and the display will dim like on the compatible Apple Watch models.
@rhogelleim, an iOS developer, also found hints of the new display tech in the Xcode 14 Preview for SwiftUI.
A preview of the rumored iPhone 14 Pro ‘Always on Display’ feature might have been leaked by Xcode 14 beta 4 Simulator. Attached are the first two frames of a video of waking the sim. Currently, Apple Watch Series 5 and later models feature Always On display mode which always shows the time and the watch face or most recent active app. The display dims when the wrist is down to preserve the battery but instantly wakes up when the wrist is raised to check the smartwatch.
To manage battery life, Apple carefully designs each watch face and does not allow third-party watch faces. Keeping that in mind, new wallpapers discovered in iOS 16 beta also confirm the support for Always-On display coming to iPhone 14 Pro models this fall.
iOS 16 is already bringing a redesigned Lock Screen experience to users with personalization features for the first time. It will not be surprising if the company also introduces an Always-On display mode on iPhone 14.
