By now, several sources have confirmed that iPhone 14 Pro models will be getting a new “punch hole+pill” shaped display, replacing the wider notch. A new leak details that the display cutouts will appear as a single long pill when the display is turned on.
Introduced in iPhone X, the notch houses the FaceID, selfie camera, and other components in a single cutout. However, Apple has separated the FaceID components and the selfie camera into two smaller cutouts for the iPhone 14 Pro models to provide more screen real estate and aesthetics.
Mark Gurman confirms iPhone 14 Pro display cutouts will appear as a single pill
The anonymous tipster told MacRumors that when the display will be on, the two cutouts will merge in a long single pill through software to get rid of the “uneven aesthetic”. The company has engineered the pixels in the dead space between the two cutouts to turn off ” to create the appearance of a unified pill shape that is less distracting when viewing content on the screen.”
Furthermore, the source also said that Apple has designed the blacked-out area, creating the single pill notch appearance, which will be expandable to display content, vertically and horizontally.
For example, Apple could make the area slightly wider to fit status icons on the left and right sides, or even extend it downward into a large rounded square when delivering certain notifications.
As all rumors must be taken which a pinch of salt, this one might carry some accuracy. ShrimpApplePro shared a photo posted on Weibo of the alleged iPhone 14 Pro packaging. In the photo, the iPhone 14 Pro display cutouts appear in a long single pill-shaped notch.
Furthermore, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has also corroborated this claim in a tweet. He wrote that it was true that the iPhone 14 Pro display cutouts will appear as “one wide pill-shaped cutout” because the two separate cutouts would look “odd”.
This is true. It looks like one wide pill shaped cutout. Having that separation would look odd during use. https://t.co/SrAtYQsENx

Recently, another leaker used a similar word to describe the new iPhone 14 Pro display. Sharing alleged changes coming in the iPhone 14 series, the leaker wrote that “a lot of developers say that punch holes look weird at first glance, but they look better than notch.”
Luckily, we will only have to wait a few more days to find out for sure what Apple has in store for us. Reportedly, the new punch hole+pill-shaped notch will be featured across iPhone 15 lineup in 2023.
