As per a new report, at least one of the iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a periscope zoom lens with 10x optical zoom. Currently, the latest iPhone 13 Pro models feature 3x optical zoom, while the competition has been offering 10x optical zoom for a while.
Periscope zoom now expected to be part of iPhone 15 Pro
It has been long rumored that Apple is working to include a periscope zoom lens in upcoming iPhone models, and while it was previously reported that it will be part of one of the iPhone 14 Pro models this year, recent reports say otherwise.
As noted by MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu says that at least one iPhone 15 Pro model in 2023 will feature a periscope camera system. This note corroborates a recent update by Ming-Chi Kuo which says that iPhone 14 Pro, to be launched this year, will feature a 48-megapixel camera, while iPhone 15, next year, will feature a periscope lens for improved optical zoom.
Ming-Chi Kuo also notes that iPhone 14 Pro will feature support for 8K video capture, which has not been part of any of Apple’s smartphones so far, however, the feature has been a regular offering in flagship smartphones by companies like Samsung and Xiaomi.
Huawei was one of the first Android manufacturers to popularize the periscope camera system, which later became a mainstay in flagship offerings by Samsung and Xiaomi too. Compared to traditional optical zoom systems, periscope zoom uses folded optics which allow light to be folded after it hits the camera sensor. All this can be achieved in a thin space, which is important for smartphones.
iPhone 14 will be launching this year and is expected to feature a punch-hole display, no notch, A16 Bionic chip, heavier titanium casing, in-display Face ID, and a 2TB storage variant.
