Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, alongside iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, during its September 9 “It’s Glowtime,” event today. The latest flagship iPhone models feature the A18 Pro chip, Camera Control, larger display sizes and much more.
“Powered by the faster, more efficient A18 Pro chip and built for Apple Intelligence, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are the most advanced iPhone models we’ve ever made,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers who are looking for the best possible iPhone will be able to take advantage of this huge step forward, whether they’re applying edits to a photo without lifting a finger, rewriting meeting notes for a more professional tone, or using the advanced camera system to capture their next masterpiece in 4K120 fps in Dolby Vision — all while enjoying extraordinary battery life.”
Display and design
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max come with notable screen upgrades. The iPhone 16 Pro features a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max boasts an impressive 6.9-inch screen, marking the largest display ever seen on an iPhone. Both models feature Super Retina XDR OLED screens with HDR support, True Tone, and ProMotion technology. The displays offer a striking contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 and peak brightness of 2,000 nits, ensuring vibrant visuals even in bright conditions.
The new models also sport the thinnest bezels of any Apple device, enhancing the immersive experience. The chassis is crafted from titanium with a new blasted finish, available in four colors: Black Titanium, White Titanium, Natural Titanium, and the new Desert Titanium.
A18 Pro chip
At the heart of the iPhone 16 Pro lineup is the A18 Pro chip, built on advanced 3nm technology. This new chip includes a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, offering up to 15% faster performance and 20% better efficiency compared to its predecessor, the A17 Pro.
The 6-core GPU, now 20% faster, supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing for enhanced graphics in gaming and other applications. With an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine, the A18 Pro delivers 17% more memory bandwidth, significantly boosting performance for Apple Intelligence tasks and AI-powered features.
Camera
The camera systems on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max receive substantial upgrades. The rear setup includes a 48MP Fusion camera with a 2nd-generation quad-pixel sensor for zero shutter lag and high-resolution ProRAW photos. The ultra-wide camera also features a 48MP quad-pixel sensor with autofocus for the first time. Additionally, the Pro model introduces the 5x telephoto camera with tetraprism design, previously exclusive to the Pro Max model.
New camera features include real-time adjustments to Photographic Styles, allowing users to personalize colors and tones both during and after photo capture. The iPhone 16 Pro models can also shoot 4K video at 120fps with HDR support, and users can adjust playback speed in the Photos app. The Camera Control button, a notable addition, offers haptic feedback and touch gestures for easy camera access and control, including zoom adjustments and quick function access.
Audio and battery
Apple has also focused on audio improvements with the iPhone 16 Pro lineup. The devices are equipped with four studio-quality microphones and support for spatial audio recording, enhancing the overall audio experience in videos. The new Audio Mix feature uses machine learning to separate and optimize background audio and speech.
Battery life is another highlight, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max offering up to 33 hours of video playback, and the iPhone 16 Pro up to 27 hours. Both models benefit from a new mechanical architecture and power management enhancements, delivering substantial gains in battery performance. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max support MagSafe charging at up to 25W and are Qi2-certified.
Price and availability
The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $999 for the 128GB model, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max begins at $1,199 for the 256GB variant. Preorders open on September 13th, with official availability set for September 20th.
