In addition to news on the upcoming iPhone 15 series expected to launch in September of this year, rumor mills also have news on the iPhone 16 series expected to launch in September 2024
Taiwanese publisher, The Elec reconfirms that Apple will introduce the Face ID under-the-display tech in iPhone 16 Pro models.
In 2017, Apple replaced the Home Button with the Touch ID authentication system with Face ID authentication in the iPhone X series. The display tech enabled the company to get rid of the large chin but it gave birth to the notch that housed Face ID and selfie camera components.
Although the notch cutout fades from the view in use, it is irksome for some users. The new “hole-punch and pill” shaped notch in the iPhone 14 Pro models with Dynamic Island indicates that the tech company is working on eliminating the annoyance of the quirky cutout.
Under-the-display tech to skip iPhone 15 Pro models and feature in iPhone 16 Pro models
Before Apple unveiled iPhone 14 series, it was reported that the under-the-display Face ID and camera would debut in iPhone 14 Pro models, along with “hole-punch and pill”. But the company only introduced “hole-punch and pill” in the latest iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and reduced the size of the notch.
Later, it was claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro models would feature a “punch-hole” display with Face ID and a camera under the screen. But sources like DSCC analyst Ross Young and tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revised the prediction and said that the technology would release in iPhone 16 series in 2024.
Now the new report, spotted by Patently Apple, reconfirms that the under-the-display Face ID and camera will debut in 2024 but will be exclusively available on iPhone 16 Pro models. The report also mentions that iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus (standard models) will be major updates.
“Apple is expected to make a big change to the lower lineup OLED in the iPhone 15 series this year, and to apply the ‘Under Panel Face ID’ function that hides Face ID under the screen from the Pro lineup next year in the iPhone 16 series.
The ‘Under Panel Face ID’ refers to a technology in which Face ID, which is required for face recognition, looks like a normal display when this function is not used. In this way, in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup, when the display screen is turned on, the hole for the Under Panel Face ID is not visible, and only the lens hole for the front camera is gathered to increase the sense of immersion.
