As we inch closer to the announcement of the iPhone 14 lineup, rumors about the 2024 iPhone models, likely the iPhone 16 lineup, are starting to surface more frequently. In a tweet posted today, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo once again claimed that under-display Face ID will be coming to the Pro variants of the 2024 flagship iPhone lineup.
Kuo reiterates that under-display Face ID will be available in iPhone 16 series in 2024
A few weeks ago, Kuo, In response to DSCC analyst Ross Young’s tweet about Apple’s plans to focus on Face ID improvements rather than advancing Touch ID, said an under-display selfie camera and Face ID may not arrive until 2024 with the iPhone 16 lineup. As for why the functionality will arrive by 2024, the analyst said “this time schedule is less of a technical issue and more of a marketing purpose.”
In a recent tweet, Kuo reiterated his earlier prediction about under-display Face ID coming to high-end iPhones in 2024. He went on to highlight some factors that are important for quality improvements.
I think the real full-screen iPhone will come in 2024. High-end iPhones in 2024 would adopt an under-display front camera alongside the under-display Face ID. A low-light condition is detrimental to front camera quality, and ISP & algorithm are critical for quality improvements.
Currently, it is widely believed that the Pro models in the iPhone 14 lineup will sport a new hole punch + pill to house the Face ID sensors and selfie camera in place of the notch design it introduced with the iPhone X. It is rumored that the design will be expanded to all models in next year’s iPhone 15 lineup.
Apart from this rumored tidbit, there is not a lot of information available about the iPhone 16 lineup as of now. 2024 could also see the release of a foldable iPhone. Several granted patents along with industry reports suggest that the tech giant is exploring the functionality and could release a foldable iPhone in the future.
