iPhone 17 to feature 24MP front camera with improved lenses

According to Apple analyst Jeff Pu, all four iPhone 17 models—the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—will feature a 24-megapixel front camera with six plastic lens elements. This is a substantial upgrade from the current iPhone 15 models, which sport a 12-megapixel front camera with five plastic lens elements.

The jump to a 24-megapixel resolution promises to enhance photo quality dramatically. Higher resolution allows for better image detail retention, even when photos are cropped extensively, providing more flexibility in post-processing. The inclusion of a six-piece lens is expected to further improve image quality by reducing aberrations and distortions, resulting in clearer and more accurate photos.

In addition to Jeff Pu’s predictions, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also highlighted the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s camera capabilities. He suggests that this model will be the first to feature three 48-megapixel camera lenses, including an advanced Tetraprism camera for superior photo quality and zoom functionality.

While the focus has largely been on the rear cameras in previous models, the iPhone 17’s front-facing camera upgrade is a notable shift. Historically, Apple has prioritized software improvements for its selfie cameras, as seen with the Photonic Engine and Smart HDR updates. However, the hardware upgrade in the iPhone 17 series marks a long-awaited enhancement for users seeking better selfie capabilities.

The iPhone 17 lineup is also expected to feature varied display sizes, ranging from 6.1 inches to 6.9 inches, along with other hardware upgrades such as the new A19 chip and increased RAM options. The regular models will have 8GB of RAM, while the Pro versions will boast 12GB. Despite these exciting developments, some rumors, like the 6.3-inch display for the regular model, remain contested among analysts.

As of right now, it is important to take this report with a grain of salt. But, with the iPhone 17 series launch drawing closer to September 2025, we expect a flood of concrete details about its groundbreaking camera system and overall performance.
