iPhone 17 Pro Max rumored for triple 48MP camera setup

Rumors regarding what Apple might have planned for the iPhone 17 Pro Max are already making the rounds, even though the tech giant hasn’t officially revealed the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro.

TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone 17 Pro Max, slated to launch in 2025, will be the first iPhone to include three 48MP camera lenses. He claims that the tetraprism 1/2.6″ 48MP sensor, which is anticipated to be used in the soon-to-be-announced iPhone 16 Pro models, will be upgraded to a 1/3.1″ 12MP sensor for the upcoming iPhone.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is poised to receive a substantial upgrade to its telephoto camera, assuming it retains the 48MP ultra-wide lens. This development could mark a significant milestone for the iPhone lineup, as it would be the first model to exclusively feature 48MP cameras across the board, abandoning the 12MP sensors found in previous generations. This shift aligns with earlier reports suggesting that Apple would equip the iPhone 16 Pro models with a 48MP ultra-wide lens.

While the current iPhone 15 Pro models boast an impressive combination of a 48MP primary camera and 12MP ultra-wide and telephoto sensors, there is always room for enhancement in the realm of smartphone photography. Kuo has also indicated that the advanced tetraprism camera technology will be incorporated into the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models.

A claim made by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Securities last year is supported by the analyst’s research. According to Pu, the improved 48MP telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be ready for usage with Apple Vision Pro in December. When the iPhone 15 Pro is held in landscape orientation, the main and ultra-wide lenses work together to record spatial video with additional depth. This allows for the recording of 3D depth in spatial video for playback on the Vision Pro.
