In response to DSCC analyst Ross Young’s tweet about Apple’s plans to focus on Face ID improvements rather than advancing Touch ID, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that an under-display camera for Face ID may not arrive until 2024 with the iPhone 16 lineup.
Analyst predicts under-display Face ID could arrive in 2024
Recent reports suggest that Apple will be transitioning to a hole punch + pill cutout notch for iPhone 14 models. In response to those reports, Ming-Chi Kuo said that he believes that the notch could be fully replaced by an under-display version in a future model.
In response to a tweet from Young saying that under-display Face ID will be coming to the iPhone 16, Kuo reiterated the prediction saying, “Under-display Face ID coming in 2024 (iPhone 16)”. As for why the functionality will arrive in that certain lineup, Kuo adds “this time schedule is less of a technical issue and more of a marketing purpose.”
It is widely expected that Apple is planning on ditching the notch design it introduced with the iPhone X in favor of a hole-punch or pill-shaped design to house the camera and Face ID components for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models in favor of a cleaner, more minimalistic look.
TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously said that Apple will be shipping some iPhone 14 models with a hole-punch display. Other sources like The Elec and Bloomberg have also reported on the new camera cut out in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
If industry leaks prove to be accurate and Apple does introduce the pill and hole-punch, it is safe to assume that the tech giant will not change the display for two generations. The only recent authentication changes Apple has made to its products recently has been the integration of Touch ID into the power button on the iPad and reducing the size of the notch by 20% with the iPhone 13 lineup.
