Apple almost doubled it’s shipment in the fourth quarter, earning it the third place among smartphone makers. The iPhone has 14.4 percent of the market, closely following No. 2, Research in Motion.
The data shows that Apple had a year-over-year growth rate of 82%, jumping to 14.4% of the smartphone market in 2009, up from 9.1 percent in 2008.
Research in Motion, also known as RIM, maker of the BlackBerry is No.2 with 19.8% of the 2009 market, up from 15.6% in 2008. However, the iPhone is growing quickly, and will soon be No. 2, only to be behind Nokia, which stands strong with 38.1% in 2009, down from 40% in 2008.
Motorola’s Droid seems to have helped Motorola. Motorola has 4.6% of the smartphone market, up from 4.1% in 2008. Shipments also increased to 2.5 Million, up from 1.6 in 2008.
