Apple is planning to release a new iPhone SE model in 2022, and as per the latest report, the company will still use the aging iPhone 8 design this year. The only new features this year will be support for 5G networking, and faster internals, which probably means a newer A-series chip.
2022 iPhone SE to launch with same design but updated internals
As shared by Dylan on Twitter, who has a good track record by Apple leaks so far, an iPhone SE with an updated design similar to iPhone XR and iPhone 11, but with a smaller screen, has been moved to 2024.
*Update to this tweet!* The iPhone SE with a similar design to the XR/11 with a slightly smaller screen size, has been pushed back to an expected release of 2024. For 2022, Apple will instead release an iPhone SE with 5G, a spec bump, and the same design as the 2020 model.
This is not the first time that we have heard these details for the upcoming 2022 iPhone SE refresh. Ming-Chi Kuo had reported back in July 2021 that the next-gen iPhone SE with A15 chip, 5G, and a 4.7-inch display will launch in the first half of 2022. Macotakara had also reported in October 2021 that the 2022 iPhone SE will feature an A15 Bionic chip, Touch ID, and the same design as iPhone 8.
Display analyst Ross Young also corroborated these reports and said that the new “iPhone SE Plus” will have the same LCD display as the current 2020 iPhone SE model. Ross Young also said that the redesigned iPhone SE with a punch-hole display and 5.7-inch – 6.1-inch LCD has been moved to 2024.
Recently, Ming-Chi Kuo had said that Apple is working on two iPhone SE models, with the 2023/2024 model featuring a larger display and 4GB memory, compared to 3GB in current models.
Even though this might not be the big design refresh that customers have been waiting for, the third-generation iPhone SE is all but confirmed to launch in the first quarter of 2022.
