The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

you have to connect your ipod to the computer
go to start menu, findsearch for asl.dll…. when results pop up right click on the asl.dll file and select open containing folder. (the location is c:program filescommon filesappleapple application support.) in this folder there is 22 .dll files. you need to copy all of them and then go to the folder containing black ra1n.exe and right click and paste the 22 dll files. now open blackra1n and it should open just fine…

i have downloaded blackra1n but at the end of installing it my ipod doesn't reboot. what do i do now?

you need to reconnect your ipod to your pc and run blackra1n again. dont worry, it wont wipe everything off you ipod
When I run blackra1n it says it can't start because it's missing the ASL.dll.
when i click on make it ra1n me ipod gives my a black screen :S
move the blackrain icon to Program files /common files/ apple support… Run it from there, it'll work.
i just blackrained it and it says it needs to be connected to itunes, which i did. Does this mean its rebooting or not?
No. When it says connect to iTunes, connect it to your computer and run blackra1n again. This is called a tethered jailbreak. You probably have an iPod Touch 3G

when the message comes up on the computer saying that its done i need too wait for reboot my ipod touch just stays black for ages and the picture of george never comes up to only way i can return to normal it to hold down the home and sleep button the reboot but then i dont have black ra1n!!!! what am i doing wrong???!!!

When I try to open blackra1n a file pops up saying “Unable to Locate Component”
and below it, it says “This application has failed to start because ASL.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
any tips on what to do?
Wow. From reading the comments, I was expecting it to take 2 hours and potentially have a brick at the end of it. Literally 30 seconds later, I have my jailbroken iPod. Excellent software, thank you very much. :D I'm impressed.
