Shortly after Apple withdrew orders of OLED display panels for the 2022 iPad Air model from Samsung, a new report suggests that LG Display is filling the open slot in the tech giant’s supply chain. LG Display display has reportedly begun developing an OLED panel for a 12.9-inch iPad Pro model that is brighter and longer-lasting.
12.9-inch iPad Pro with OLED display coming in 2023 or 2024
A recent report by South Korea supply chain monitor The Elec suggests that Apple is planning to release two new iPad Pro models with OLED displays towards the end of 2023 or in early 2024. Samsung Display may also supply display panels for the OLED iPad Pro models alongside LG Display.
LG Display has begun the development of 12.9-inch OLED iPad, TheElec has learned.
As Samsung Display recently scrapped the development of a 10.86-inch OLED iPad it was proceeding with Apple, LG Display will likely be able to enter the IT OLED market at a level playing field with its South Korean compatriot.
As per the report, the new tablet will utilize two-stack LTPO technology to increase the brightness and lifespan of the display. In addition, LPTO technology would also allow a variable refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz. for Apple’s ProMotion display.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro now seems to be the first choice for Apple’s transition to OLED displays in its tablet lineup instead of iPad Air. In a recent investor note, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple has scrapped its plans to launch an OLED iPad Air in 2022 because “the performance and cost could not meet Apple’s requirements.” Multiple industry sources are now pointing to a launch by 2023 or later.
The report does dispel a dubious report which claimed that Apple will replace the currently used LCD displays with OLED displays in its 2022 iPads. The tech giant currently uses OLED displays in iPhone, Apple Watch, and the MacBook’s touch bar.
