Apple introduced the new M1 iMac at the Spring Loaded event. The launch of Apple’s all-in-one computer models is part of the company’s 2 years program to transition the Mac line-up from Intel-based processors to Apple Silicon. And that is a giant leap forward for the company to offer high performance, innovative technology, and incredible battery life.
Last year in November, the Cupertino tech giant launched the first generation M1 MacBook Pro, M1 MacBook Air, and M1 Mac mini. All three Mac models received promising reviews because of their impressive CPU and GPU performance which is better than Intel-based Macs and third-party laptops in the market. And now the same powerful chip is used in the new all-in-one computer. Here is everything new in the 24-inch M1 iMac.
Everything new in the 24-inch M1 iMac
Design
For a personalized experience, the new M1 iMac comes in six new colors: blue, green, pink, silver, yellow, orange, and purple. The computers have dark saturated backs and softer gradient front so users are not distracted from the work. It has a simple flat edges design with a single sheet of glass covering the entire surface with 11.5 mm thickness which makes it 50% thinner than the previous 21.5-inch model.
The new sleek and compact design is achieved because of the system-on-a-chip architecture of M1 Apple Silicon which has made a smaller logic board possible and allowed the company to equip the computer with a new 2 fans thermal system to efficiently and quietly keep the computer cool. The fans create less than 10 decibel sound.
Display
The new iMac has a larger 24-inch screen with thinner bezels and a rich resolution. The 4.5K Retina display has 11.3 million pixels, P3 wide gamut, and more for bright and vivid images, Ture Tone automatically adjusts the color temperature according to the users’ surrounding light conditions for a natural viewing experience.
The screen has an anti-reflective coating for better readability and comfort to deliver an incredible M1 iMac experience, “whether you’re editing photos, working on presentations, or watching your favorite shows and movies, everything looks incredible on iMac.”
Camera, Speakers, and Mic
iMac has a 1080p FaceTime HD camera for 2x better resolution than 21.5-inch iMac for higher quality video and a larger sensor for improved performance in low light conditions. Paired with M1, the camera has an image signal processor (ISP) to further enhance image quality with computational video by automatically reducing noise, adjusting exposure, and enhancing dynamic range.
The studio-quality three mic array is used to reduce feedback, ignore background noises, and focus on the speakers’ voice for a more natural flow of conversations.
And to deliver a deliver big room-filling sound experience, the computer is equipped with a six-speaker system that produces a massive soundstage with strong and articulate bass and crystal clear mids and highs. Advance speakers and algorithms allow the new M1 iMac to support spatial audio for videos with Dolby Atmos for an amazing movie-watching experience which makes it the “best camera, mics and best sound system ever in a Mac.”
New accessories
The M1 iMac comes with Magic Keyboard, mouse, and trackpad. Furthermore, users can choose from three different types of keyboards: first, Magic Keyboard with new emoji, spotlight, dictation, do not disturb and lock keys. Second, Magic Keyboard with new features like Touch ID for fingerprint authentication, faster switching, and more. And third Magic keyboard with Touch ID and numerical keypad
All the accompanying accessories come in a color-matched scheme.
Performance
The power of M1 and the macOS Big Sur make the new M1 iMac an incredible machine. It wakes up instantly, apps launch much faster, delivers faster browsing, photos and videos editing, and gaming experience. The computer 85% faster CPU performance than the previous 21.5-inch iMac, 2x GPU performance, 50% faster graphics and has 3x faster machine learning.
Users already in Apple’s ecosystem can conveniently run native iOS apps on the new iMac like Headspace and Zillow, receive calls and messages, continue work across devices, and much more.
M1 is the most powerful chip we’ve ever made. macOS Big Sur is the most advanced desktop operating system in the world. Combined, they take iMac to entirely new levels of performance, efficiency, and security. iMac wakes from sleep almost instantly, apps launch in a flash, and the whole system feels fluid, smooth, and snappy. With up to 85 percent faster CPU performance and up to two times faster graphics performance than standard 21.5‑inch iMac models, you can use apps like Xcode and Affinity Photo to compile code in a fraction of the time or edit photos in real time. And it runs cool and quiet even while tackling these intense workloads. That’s the power of hardware, software, and silicon — all designed together.
Connectivity
The M1 iMac has up to 4 USB-C ports with 2 Thunderbolt ports for faster data transfer. It supports up to 6K display support like Pro XDR display and has a magnetic power connector.
