Apple confirmed that the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro will gain multi-display support through a future software update. This means the laptop will be able to drive two external 5K displays at up to 60Hz when closed, similar to the new M3 MacBook Air.

Previously, the M3 MacBook Pro, released in late 2023, could not initially drive multiple external displays. This limitation came as a surprise to many, especially considering the higher-end M3 Pro and M3 Max models boasted multi-display support from the get-go.
Thankfully, Apple seems to have taken user feedback into account. Recognizing the value of multi-display capabilities for many users, the company has chosen to address this limitation through a software update.
This update will bring the functionality in line with the new M3 MacBook Air, which allows users to connect two external displays with up to 5K resolution while the laptop lid is closed.
Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that a software update for the 14-inch MacBook Pro will gain the ability to drive two external displays with the lid closed. The feature will work identically to how it works with the new M3 MacBook Air.
The addition of multi-display support is particularly impactful for professionals who rely on their M3 MacBook Pros for demanding tasks. From intricate design work to high-resolution video editing and complex data analysis, having multiple monitors improves workflow efficiency and visual clarity significantly.
While Apple hasn’t announced an official release date for the update, the company has stated it will arrive “soon.” Speculations point towards its inclusion in the upcoming macOS Sonoma 14.4 update, which is currently under development.
It’s important to note that this update will only apply to the base M3 MacBook Pro model. The M3 Pro and M3 Max variants already offer native multi-display support and won’t require any changes.
