Apple preps M4 Mac lineup for October launch, 16GB or 32GB RAM to be introduced

According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is gearing up for an exciting year with the anticipated launch of new Mac models featuring the latest M4 chip.

The tech giant is currently testing four new Mac configurations, each equipped with the M4 chip, signaling a significant update to the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac lineups. These new models are expected to make their debut in October, following the iPhone 16 launch event.

M4 chip

The M4 chip, Apple’s latest in its line of custom silicon, promises to elevate the performance of its Mac lineup. Developer logs reveal that three of the new Mac models are equipped with a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, while the fourth model features an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU. This variant, with an 8-core configuration, marks a departure from the standard M4 setups we’ve seen in devices like the iPad Pro. All four models will reportedly come with either 16GB or 32GB of Unified Memory, a notable increase from previous base configurations.

This potential boost in RAM is particularly intriguing for users who have long criticized Apple’s entry-level Macs for their limited memory. The base models traditionally shipped with 8GB of RAM, which, while sufficient for basic tasks, often struggled under the demands of more intensive applications. By increasing the base RAM to 16GB, Apple is likely addressing these concerns, making its entry-level Macs more capable of handling modern software and multitasking with ease.

The significance of this update extends beyond just the specs. With the introduction of Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI-powered features, the demand for more memory is becoming increasingly important. The potential for these new Macs to come equipped with 16GB of RAM as a standard feature suggests that Apple is positioning its machines to better handle these resource-intensive tasks, ensuring a smoother, more efficient user experience.

While details about the higher-end M4 Pro and M4 Max chips remain scarce, it’s expected that these variants will follow in 2025, offering even more powerful configurations for users who need the utmost performance. Historically, Apple has staggered the release of its Pro and Max chips, so we’ll likely see these more advanced models in the coming year.
