After not releasing the feature in any of the macOS Monterey betas to date, Apple has finally updated its website to indicate that Universal Control will release in Spring 2022. The feature was already delayed from the first macOS Monterey release, version 12.0, but now that macOS Monterey 12.1 was released today, the feature was still nowhere to be found.
Here is the new notification on Apple’s website when you visit either the macOS Monterey or iPadOS 15 webpages:
Universal Control delayed to spring 2022
In case you don’t know, Universal Control was perhaps the coolest feature that was demoed for macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15. The feature would allow a user to use a single keyboard and mouse or trackpad to work seamlessly between multiple Macs and iPads. Users would have been able to move their mouse cursor between different devices, simply by pushing it to the edge of the screen. The same keyboard would also be useable on any of the devices that are part of Universal Control.
Universal Control would also have allowed users to drag and drop files in real-time between multiple Mac and iPad, and in true Apple fashion, the feature is supposed to work with zero setup required. All users need to do is put their devices next to each other.
As someone who uses a Mac and iPad Pro, this feature had me excited, and I still look forward to its release. However, Apple has been silent on its development progress or any challenges that it is clearly facing.
Universal Control has not been the only macOS Monterey feature that saw a delay. SharePlay was yet another feature that was delayed from the initial macOS Monterey release, but has been released as part of macOS Monterey 12.1 today.
Until Apple releases this much-awaited feature in Spring 2022, we suggest you try out the following new macOS Monterey 12.1 features:
