macOS 12.3 beta might cause boot loop issues for macOS Catalina users using FileVault

Apple has published warnings for users running their Macs on macOS Catalina of a boot loop issue when installing macOS 12.3 or macOS Big Sur 11.6.4 betas, if the FileVault is enabled. FileVault is an encryption technology in macOS that can prevent unauthorized access to files on a drive.

Last week, Apple seeded the first developer beta of macOS 12.3 with several new features like Universal Control, screen sharing API, and improvements for Apple Pay, authentication, and others.

FileVault may cause a boot loop when updating from macOS Cataline to macOS 12.3 beta or macOS 11.6.4 beta

According to the warning in macOS Monterey 12.3 release notes, users might experience an issue on a volume with FileVault which can lead to a boot loop. Apple wrote:

If your Mac currently has macOS Catalina installed, installing macOS Monterey 12.3 beta or macOS Big Sur 11.6.4 beta on a volume with FileVault enabled might cause a boot loop when attempting to log back into the previous volume. (88163545)

To avoid facing such an issue, users running macOS Catalina should disable FileVault before installing the aforementioned macOS beta updates.

macOS 12.3 boot issue

Earlier, Dropbox announced that Mac users running the new macOS 12.3 update will face issues with accessing online-only files without mentioning its cause. Later, Apple explained the reason behind the Dropbox issue in macOS 12.3 release notes.

The company says that it has removed kernel extensions used by Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive, however, both companies are developing their replacements.

“Apple today seeded the first beta of macOS 12.3 to developers for testing. In the release notes for the update, Apple confirms that it has deprecated kernel extensions used by Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive and notes that both cloud storage services have replacements for the functionality currently in beta.”
