Microsoft is going to update the Phone Link app with support for iMessage and notification on Windows 11.
Phone Link app for iOS allows users to connect their iPhone to their Windows PC and access their text messages, make and receive calls, drag files between PC and phone, and more directly on their PC.
Preview of the new Phone Link app is available for Windows Insider program members
For pre-release testing purposes, Microsoft has released the preview of the new Phone Link app to the members of its Windows Insider program.
The new app will allow iPhone users to send and receive texts via iMessage directly from their Windows PC, along with receiving iOS notifications. However, it will not be the same experience as macOS and users will have to work around the following limitations:
- Texts will not appear in green and blue chat bubbles to differentiate between regular SMS and an iMessage.
- The app does not support Photos, so users will not be able to send photos in messages.
- The group chat feature in iMessage is not available.
- The app will not display the entire message log, only show messages sent or received via Phone Link.
The company released iCloud integration in the Photos app on Windows 11 in 2022, and earlier this year, debuted preview versions of Apple Music and Apple TV apps in the Microsoft Store for Windows 11.
However, Microsoft recently introduced new Spotify and Phone Link widgets for Windows 11 so users can control music and Android devices more easily but lacked support for iOS devices. Therefore, the app’s deeper integration with iOS is good news for iPhone users.
Interested users can download the Phone Link app from the Microsoft Store.
