Apple is reportedly working on integrating OLED displays into its iPad mini, targeting a highly anticipated release in late 2026.
According to industry reports, Samsung Display began developing sample 8-inch OLED panels specifically for the next-generation iPad mini in April 2024, with plans to initiate mass production in the second half of 2025. This timeline suggests that the new OLED iPad mini will be ready for consumers in late 2026.
Apple’s cautious rollout strategy for OLED displays stems from its commitment to rigorous quality assurance and market testing. By introducing OLED technology first in the iPad Pro models, Apple aims to gather consumer feedback and address any potential issues before extending the technology to other models like the iPad mini.
Securing a stable supply chain for high-quality OLED panels is another critical factor. Apple relies on suppliers like LG Display and Samsung to deliver these advanced displays. Ensuring a consistent and reliable supply is essential to meeting the standards Apple sets for its products.
The upcoming iPad mini is expected to feature an 8.7-inch OLED screen, a slight increase from its current 8.3-inch LCD display. This shift to OLED technology will bring several benefits, including better color accuracy, higher contrast ratios, and improved energy efficiency. Unlike the iPad Pro’s advanced two-stack LTPO OLED panels, the iPad mini will use single-stack LTPS panels. While these panels may be less bright, they will still offer a substantial improvement over the existing LCDs.
In addition to the display upgrade, the OLED iPad mini will likely include other enhancements. These may involve more powerful processors, better battery life, and potential fixes for issues found in current models, such as the infamous “jelly scrolling” problem. These improvements will ensure the iPad mini remains competitive and appealing to a wide range of users.
Apple’s decision to introduce OLED technology gradually across its iPad lineup allows it to manage production costs and address technical challenges efficiently. By first perfecting OLED implementation in the 2024 iPad Pro models, Apple can ensure a smoother transition when introducing the technology to the iPad mini.
