Although Apple could not finalize the deal with NFL for Sunday Ticket games streaming rights, it is possible that the company can land Pac-12 football.
New York Post reports that Apple TV+ has emerged as a strong contender for streaming rights of Pac-12 college football as the interest of other streamers like Amazon Prime Video, Fox Sports, and ESPN dwindles in the league.
Operating in the Western United States, Pac-12 Conference is a collegiate athletic conference including 12 members from universities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
Its teams participate in 24 sports at the NCAA Division 1 level. The Pac-12 football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the highest level of college football in the country.
Apple might agree to an all-in deal similar to MLS to acquire Pac-12 football streaming rights
Recently, the live stream of three MLS pre-season games began on the Apple TV app ahead of the season kickoff. The availability of the MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app is part of the company’s 10-year partnership with MLS “the historic first for a major professional sports league.”
According to the report, Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff is likely to present Apple as the “possibility” to his schools soon because its current deal with ESPN and Fox Sports is going to expire in the next season.
Although it is uncertain if the deal will materialize, it is speculated that Pac-12 and Apple might strike an all-in deal like with MLS.
Apple TV+ began streaming live baseball games on Friday nights last season. The service is about to start a 10-year, $2.5 billion agreement with MLS in which it will have the global rights to stream all the league’s games with an all-inclusive package that will be $99 for subscribers. An all-in deal similar to MLS’s agreement would be more in line for the Pac-12 with Apple.
The Pac-12 football schools include the following college teams:
- University of Arizona
- Arizona State University
- University of California, Berkeley
- University of California, Los Angeles
- University of Colorado, Boulder
- University of Oregon
- Oregon State University
- University of Southern California
- Stanford University
- University of Utah
- University of Washington
- Washington State University
