The photo editing app, Pixelmator Photo has announced its switch to subscription pricing from the one-time purchase model on iOS and iPadOS and a new Mac app coming by late 2022 or early 2023.
Pixelmator Photo brings the desktop photo editing experience to iPhone and iPad with native support for RAW editing and powerful tools for color adjustment like Curves, Levels, Hue & Saturation, Black &White, Selective Color, and more. Integrated with the iOS, Pixelmator Photo automatically syncs users’ changes to the Photos app.
Pixelmator Photo on iOS and iPadOS now costs $4.00 per month for new users
As per the announcement, the new subscription price of Pixelmator Photo on iPhone and iPad is $4.99 per month or $23.99 per year. Luckily, the existing paid users get unlimited access for free.
The company explained that the switch to subscription pricing was necessary to sustain the business. The lack of funding and inflex of capital pushed Pixelmator to abandon the one-time purchase model which did not cover the development cost of new updates.
It also said that paid upfront model created issues like slower development, the pressure to offer “super exciting” paid upgrades, the inability to offer upgrade discounts, and other problems.
Now with the new monthly subscription model, the company expects the app to grow and become the best version of itself.
But the hope is that there are enough users who use the app regularly and feel that the annual or monthly fee is worth it. It looks like this is the best way to ensure Pixelmator Photo can continue to be developed long into the future, keep growing, and become the best app it can be.
For early subscribers, the new Pixelmator Photo on Mac will be included in the $4.99 monthly fee
The company has also announced the launch of Pixelmator Photo for Mac in the coming months. And as an incentive for early subscribers, the company will offer the Mac version for free.
It’s going to be a completely native app – designed from the ground up just for Mac. The plan is to ship it late this year or early next year. And those who subscribe to Pixelmator Photo now will get Pixelmator Photo for Mac for free, which is a pretty sweet deal.
The latest update of the app is available on the App Store. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running on iOS 14.0 or later and iPadOS 14.0 or later, respectively. Previously, the app introduced a redesigned keyboard for numeric input, a few improvements for the Photos browser, and more.
