Potential Apple Car manufacturers including Nissan, Foxconn, and Stellantis

Apple Car’s revolving list of potential manufacturers has been under the magnifying glass recently. This list includes established manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia, who ran to the press and spilled the beans which might have ruined the deal, and Nissan which has a good EV platform that Apple could use. There are other companies in this list like Foxconn and Stellantis, which are not known to have an EV platform, but could be new manufacturers that tech companies like Apple could partner with.

New reports by The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg peg Nissan as a serious manufacturer that is seriously considering signing a deal with Apple for its future car efforts. Nissan is an established car manufacturer from Japan, and could bring along a lot of experience with it. Nissan has an EV platform that it developed with Renault, its French partner car maker, but it has been looking to boost its sales as it faced its biggest lost in 2019.

Apple Car still needs a manufacturer and Nissan is the hot favorite at the moment

WSJ reports that Nissan’s stock has rallied because of news of a potential partnership with Apple, a pattern we have seen with any car maker that is in the news for discussions with the Cupertino tech giant:

Nissan is the latest car maker to signal its openness to a deal. As technology transforms the auto industry, “we need to take new initiatives” and “work with companies that are knowledgeable, with good experience, through partnership and collaboration,” said Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida on Tuesday. This was in response to a question about his willingness to partner with Apple at a press conference to discuss the Japanese car maker’s quarterly results.

Hyundia and Kia are out of the running for a potential partnership right now, as per the latest bit of news. Other potential candidates that are not popularly known for making cars include Foxconn, Magna, and Stellantis. Foxconn is investing in an EV platform, and already works with Apple on many products like iPhone and Mac. Magna, although not a popular brand, is the third biggest supplier of auto parts in the world. The company already provides engineering and manufacturing services for other EV startups like Fisker, and is working on its own EV powertrains. Lastly, Stellantis is another manufacturer from Europe that is looking to form new partnerships to post growth after its recent drop in sales. Its CEO and Chairman have expressed interest in the past towards working with tech companies like Apple and Google to create EV tech.

It is all but certain that we will find out who will actually be partnering with the Cupertino giant to create the Apple Car. This will be a unique announcement in Apple’s history as it will completely confirm the company’s plans many years in advance. It will be interesting to see how Apple manages such an announcement and continues to develop its EV under secrecy with a new partner.
