At the earning calls of 2021 first quarter, the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook told that the company had all-time high iPhone upgrades in the current fiscal quarter. Cupertino tech giant launched its latest flagship iPhone 12 series in October 2020 with all four models offering advanced technology like A14 Bionic chip, 5G network support, OLED display, Ceramic Shield protection, Ultra-wide and Wide lens, Dolby Vision support, and much more. The new smartphone lineup also comes in a new flat edge-to-edge design, and MagSafe wireless charging support and accessories. And these improvements have attracted consumers to upgrade to an iPhone.
In April 2020, when Apple launched the second-generation iPhone SE, Cook expected that the model’s low cost and advanced features will attract Andriod users to switch to Apple, especially in low-income geographic regions. However, out of the four models, the high-end iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max models have had the strongest demand since the launch. Maybe that led to a higher iPhone upgrade.
Apple saw the most iPhone upgrades in Q1 2021, ever!
The CEO said that although the company saw an increase in Android and upgrades in the 2021 first fiscal quarter, the number of upgraders was higher. He said,
“If you look at this past quarter, which has — we started selling two — two of the iPhones four weeks into the quarter and the other two seven weeks into the quarter. And so I — I would caution that this is in the early going.
But in looking at the iPhone 12 family, we saw both switchers and upgraders increase on a year-over-year basis; and in fact, we saw the largest number of upgraders that we’ve ever seen in a quarter. And so we were very thrilled about that.”
In an interview, Cook told Reuter that the company has an active installed base of 1.65 billion devices, more than 1.5 billion devices in the same quarter last year.
Currently, Apple sells a diverse range of smartphone models at its physical and online stores, from low to high price range, catering to wider demographics.

Major camera improvements in the iPhone 12 Pro models have made them popular. For the first time, Apple has equipped the Pro models with advanced camera hardware and software features like Telephoto lens, up to 5x optical zoom, and Apple ProRAW. Cook said:
iPhone grew by 17% year over year, driven by strong demand for the iPhone 12 family, and our active installed base of iPhones is now over 1 billion. The customer response to the new iPhone 12 models’ unprecedented innovation from world-class cameras to the great and growing potential of 5G has been enthusiastic, even in light of the ongoing COVID-19 impact at retail locations.
