Redesigned HBO Max app for Apple TV introduces new My Stuff, scrollable hero banners and more

WarnerMedia has updated the HBO Max app for Apple TV set-top-box with new features and performance improvements. The company says that the new HBO Max app is rebuilt on its next-generation platform to take advantage of Apple TV and Apple TV 4K powerful processors. It will be rolling out to users starting this week till th next week.

After several issues were reported on the app, an HBO executive promised users a new app built from the “ground up to the match the needs of the current service” in August 2021.

According to Variety, the new HBO Max app for tvOS has the same visual design as the predecessor version but it is more stable than before and offer several new features. 

  • A new homepage view with a scrollable “hero” banner.
  • Ability to skip credits.
  • Easier sign-in and sign-up.
  • New “My Stuff” features that allow users to edit and organize their My List and Continue Watching Lists.

Commenting on the new app, Sarah Lyons, WarnerMedia’s EVP, direct-to-consumer global product management said the company deliberately decided to use the code of HBP Go and HBO Now apps which were not designed to support big content catalog but it did help the company to speed up the launch HBO Max’s time-to-market rollout. However, they knew that replatfrom wil be required later. 

Therefore, the new HBO Max app for Apple TV is designed “to take advantage the devices’ processing horsepower to provide more dynamic interface animations, “cooler, whiz-bang stuff”.

Download the HBO Max app for Apple TV from App Store for free with a monthly subscription fee. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and Apple TV and requires iOS 12.2 or later, macOS 11.0 or later, and tvOS 12.0 or later, respectively. Existing users can update the app to the latest version via App Store.
