Apple is reportedly gearing up to release an updated Mac mini with the M4 chip. This device is expected to bring several notable changes, including a redesign that aligns with Apple’s continued push towards more compact, efficient, and powerful hardware.
Design and size
The new Mac mini is rumored to be significantly smaller than its predecessors, potentially with dimensions closer to an Apple TV’s. While exact measurements are not yet confirmed, this size reduction is expected to make it more portable and space-efficient, without compromising on performance. The device will retain its iconic aluminum shell but may feature subtle changes in material composition to enhance durability and thermal efficiency.
Thermal design
Given the smaller form factor, Apple is likely implementing advanced thermal management systems. The cooling mechanism might include a re-engineered heat sink, improved airflow design, and possibly even a fanless operation, thanks to the efficiency of the M4 chip.
Hardware specifications
The M4 features a 16-core Neural Engine delivering 60x the performance of the A11 Bionic’s Neural Processing Unit, enhancing accessibility, content creation, and music production. It offers a 50% CPU boost over the M2, with a 10-core GPU for improved graphics in gaming and video editing, and introduces hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading. With up to 120GB/s unified memory bandwidth and built on second-generation 3nm technology, the M4 chip promises unprecedented power and efficiency.
In terms of memory, the new Mac mini might offer LPDDR5 RAM with faster data rates and lower latency, available in configurations starting from 16GB. Storage options could include SSDs with even faster read/write speeds, with capacities starting from 512GB, scalable up to 4TB.
Connectivity and ports
The Mac mini is expected to retain a versatile array of ports, though some changes may be in store. The device will likely feature multiple USB-C ports with USB 4.0 compatibility, offering data transfer rates of up to 40 Gbps and supporting power delivery for connected devices.
