Siri can now tell you what animals, vehicles, instruments, and more sound like

Released with iOS 14.3 on Monday, Apple added a new feature to Siri that enables the voice assistant to playback short audio clips when asked about specific sounds.

The Cupertino tech giant’s popular voice assistant can now imitate many different animals, instruments, and vehicles. The tech giant says there are hundreds of new sounds Siri knows and will playback when prompted.

To test the feature, simply ask the voice assistant what something sounds like. Here are the examples Apple has given to CNBC of some sounds Siri knows:

  • “Hey Siri, what does a humpback whale sound like?”
  • “Hey Siri, what does a harp sound like?”
  • “Hey Siri, what do firetrucks sound like?”

On an iPhone or iPad, the voice assistant also brings up a picture of the animal and a link to more information from Wikipedia, which makes this latest feature an excellent learning tool for kids.

The outlet also tried the feature with different animals and discovered it works for a cat, a lion, a bald eagle, and more. The audio played is realistic as opposed to cartoon-like, CNBC reports:

“CNBC also tried it out with a few other animals, including a domestic cat, a lion, a bald eagle, and, in an example of how specific it can get, a kookaburra, a type of bird which sounds like somebody laughing. Siri also played several car sounds, a train whistle, and a short sample of a theremin as well.”

Some users who have downloaded iOS 14.3 should be able to try out the feature immediately after updating their device. However, it is rolling out slowly, since some users are still reporting receiving web results when they try it out. The latest iOS update also includes support for Apple Fitness+, privacy labels for the App Store, and support for AirPods Max.
