Use Smart Pill ID to quickly Identify pills with your smartphone camera

Smart Pill ID is a new app that uses smartphone cameras to identify pills through Artificial Intelligence. The app offers accurate results and clinical data that can help users get in-depth information about any pills they might be taking. The app was developed to help combat pharmacy dispensing errors that take the lives of almost 10,000 US citizens manually.

The app is easy to use; to scan a pill, users simply have to point and shoot using their smartphone cameras. Smart Pill ID then provides a ton of information on the pill including precautions, drug prices, description, and more. Note that the app does not collect any personal information and images.

To use the app, simply take a picture, choose from photos or manually enter pill details to identify pills and get details. Users can also save pills to reference them easily. The AI in Smart Pill ID extracts the imprint, color, shape, and size of any given pill and reverse searches several databases to produce results.

When viewing the information for a pill, users may view details of the prescription including precautions, overdosage and description. More in-depth information is available with the Consumer Pro Plan. These features include unlimited scans, pregnancy information, usage, an ad-free experience, and more.

Health care providers can obtain even more information with the Clinical Plan like drug label documents, manufacturer documents, laboratory tests, adverse reactions, and more.

On Reddit, the developer of Smart Pill ID explained their reasoning behind developing the app. The developer created this tool to help combat the 10,000 US deaths every year due to pharmacy dispensing errors. They then went on to detail their own experience with a pharmacy error:

“I created this product to try and combat the near 10,000 US deaths every year due to pharmacy dispensing errors. I was nearly part of that statistic many years ago, when the pharmacist gave me pills over 100x the dose that was prescribed. The bottle was correct, the pill was correct, but the imprint was slightly different. I thought nothing of it. After taking the pill for several days, I noticed my BPM was in the 200’s at rest. I took a look at the pill again and decided to take it to the pharmacist where she broke down in tears asking for forgiveness.”

It is important to note that Smart Pill ID does come with a disclaimer. Though the app can have “life-saving measures,” it should not be used to make any sort of medical decision. Please contact a physician before making any medical decisions using data provided by the app.

“DISCLAIMER: Do not rely on Smart Pill Identifier to make decisions regarding medical care. Always contact a physician before making any medical decisions. While we make every effort to ensure that data is accurate, you should assume all results are unvalidated.”

Smart Pill ID can be downloaded from the App Store for $2.99 with in-app purchases ranging from $4.99 to $99.99. The app requires iOS 11.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. For Mac, the app requires macOS 11 or later and a Mac with Apple’s M1 chip.
