In its first quarter of 2021, Snapchat reports that it had more daily active users (DUAs) on its Android version than the iOS app. Although the social media app saw 22% Year-on-Year growth in engagement on both iOS and Android platforms, for the first time since its launch in 2011, the DAUs on Android surpassed iOS numbers.
The increase on Android comes as a surprise because Snapchat was launched as an iPhone or iOS app. Even now, the video creating app introduced new features on iOS first like the TikTok feature to add music to videos and new augmented reality effects exclusively compatible with iPhone 12 Pro models’ LiDAR scanner.
Snapchat daily active users on Android surpass iOS
The company’s Q1 2021 earnings report states that with a 51million increase in DUAs, the app has 280 million daily active users and most of them were Android users. Maybe the company’s expansion of its partner ecosystem with Samsung to feature popular Lenses was a contributing factor in the increase.

The newly launched Spotlight feature is also available on the Android version of the app, which was used by over 125 million users. The new TikTok-like feature is a new section on Snapchat which houses the most entertaining snaps by public account on the app in a place. To ensure even more engagement, the company announced a $1 million reward price to share among creators so they submit videos to Spotlight.
