Schematics stolen from Quanta Computer, an Apple supplier, have been leaked online which reveal features for the company’s upcoming 2021 MacBook Pro models. These new models, expected to be powered by Apple Silicon that is more powerful than the current M1 chip, have long been rumored to feature more ports including an SD card reader, HDMI port, and MagSafe charging, in addition to Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. These new leaks confirm all these details.
The schematics, stolen by a group of hackers called REvil, have been released online. The hackers have demanded $50 million from Apple and threatened that they will release thousands of files regarding Apple products that they had obtained from their hack. A deadline of May 1 has been given to the Cupertino giant, and the hackers plan to release new files every day. Quanta had responded that it has contacted law enforcement agencies, and gave the following statement to Bloomberg, while Apple has not commented on this matter.
Quanta Computer’s information security team has worked with external IT experts in response to cyber attacks on a small number of Quanta servers,” the company said in a statement. “We’ve reported to and kept seamless communications with the relevant law enforcement and data protection authorities concerning recent abnormal activities observed. There’s no material impact on the company’s business operation.
Considering Apple’s history of secrecy around future products, we can imagine that the management would be furiously looking to put a lid on these leaks.
2021 MacBook Pro to feature MagSafe, HDMI, SD Card Reader, and three USB-C ports
So far, the stolen schematics released online reveal two new 2021 MacBook Pro models with the codenames J314 and J316, referring to 14-inch and 16-inch models respectively. As reported by 9to5Mac, both of these 2021 MacBook Pro models are in the Engineering Validation Test prototype stage, as of March 2021. The leaks reveal a bunch of highly technical details such as power specifications, but they also confirm that HDMI, SD card reader, MagSafe, and three USB-C ports will be included in the new MacBook Pro models.
An image from the schematics reveals that the right side of the MacBook Pro will contain an HDMI port, a USB-C port, and an SD card reader slot.
The new 2021 MacBook Pro models are expected to launch with a new design and powerful M1X processors later this year. Check out our previous coverage of leaks regarding the upcoming models:
