Apple suppliers prepare for upcoming Apple Watch Series 6 and third-generation AirPods

Apple supplier, ASE Technology is packaging core chips for at least two new Apple Watch models based on its system-in-package technology, and it will also include the technology inside the third-generation AirPods, according to a recent report.

The upcoming smartwatch lineup is expected to announce in October, whereas the third-generation AirPods are expected to release in the first half of 2021.

Apple Watch Series 6

Earlier in the week, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Debby Wu reported that the new Apple Watch lineup will include a successor to the Apple Watch Series 5 and a fill-in for the Series 3 Watch that will compete with lower-cost fitness smartwatches like Fitbits.

New Apple Watch models are usually announced with new iPhones in September, however, many reports suggest that this year the new Apple Watch Series 6 models will be revealed in October with the new iPhone 12. Reported features of the next-generation smartwatch will include a new S6 processor for upgraded performance, increased health capabilities like blood oxygen monitoring, and faster Wi-Fi and cellular speeds.

Third-generation AirPods in 2021

The report also claims that third-generation AirPods will be released in 2021, lining up with a timeframe shared by TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suspects a launch in the first half of the year specifically. There have been differing reports as to whether these AirPods will don the same design as the AirPods Pro, including silicone in-ear tips and shorter stems below the ears.

It is suspected that the tech giant will switch its next-generation AirPods 3 to a complex system-in-package chip solution, which will replace the current surface mount technology the device uses. By switching to chip packaging technology, the product could bring advanced features enjoyed by owners of the AirPods Pro to other users at a more affordable price point.

The Cupertino tech giant is rumored to have several other products in the works, including a 10.8-inch iPad Air with a similar design to the iPad Pro, over-ear AirPods headphones, a new Apple TV, and AirTags. Most of these products will likely be released by the end of 2020, but that timeline is very uncertain due to the current global health crisis.
