New features coming to Apple TV with tvOS 15
Earlier in the WWDC 21 Keynote, Apple announced SharePlay, a feature that allows users to watch videos and stream content together via screen sharing on FaceTime. While you can stream content on your smartphone or tablet, you can also AirPlay to your Apple TV, so you can enjoy it on a bigger screen while continuing your video chat.
Apple demonstrated the feature using an episode from Apple TV+, but SharePlay also features support for Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, NBA, Twitch, TikTok, MasterClass, ESPN+, Paramount+, and Pluto TV. Apple also said that there will be an API available to third-party apps and streaming services compatible with SharePlay.
Support for Spatial Audio with AirPods Pro and AirPods Max is also coming to tvOS 15. Spatial Audio is a three-dimensional sound experience on your headphones without the need for a surround sound system – making your TV experience theater-like. In addition to this, HomePod mini owners will be able to use the device as a default speaker for Apple TV. The “Hey Siri” command can be used to play content on the TV now.
tvOS 15 will bring in shows and movies friends and family have shared with you via Messages into the TV app into a new section called “Shared With You.” If you live with multiple people who have different viewing habits, there is a new section called “For All of You” which finds recommendations that are suitable for everyone.
