Twitter has redesigned its iOS app with a new ‘Spaces discovery tab’ in the navigation bar. Twitter Spaces, audio-only chat rooms, features is inspired by the podcast-centered Clubhouse app, and the new feature is designed to make Spaces a more visible and prominent part of the Twitter experience. The company calls it a “small experiment focused on the intimacy of the human voice.”
Wanting to capture a share of the growing digital audio-chat market like the Clubhouse app, the social media company began beta testing of ‘Twitter Spaces‘ in December 2020. Currently, available around five hundred users with 600 followers each, Spaces enable them to share audio clips in tweets and direct messages. In addition, users are also given the freedom to create or join chat rooms to build a community. Hosts of Spaces chat rooms have moderate chats by controlling who speaks.
“Audio adds an additional layer of connection to the public conversation. Musicians and authors have used it to bring their works to life, while other people used audio to tell stories, share emotion, and be their true, funny selves. We also know that people want to feel comfortable and in control when having conversations on Twitter.”
Twitter Spaces get a new dedicated tab on the social media’s iOS app
TechCrunch reports that the Twitter iOS app has a fifth new section called the ‘Spaces discovery tab’ which allows users to see the created Spaces of the people they follow. The company said that:
“Even though Spaces can be fun, it understands the live events have been hard to find and keep track of, given there’s been no dedicated place where Spaces can be discovered. The new tab aims to change that.
Within the tab, users will be able to see active Spaces with more details, including Space names, hosts and people you know who are participating. The tab will also allow users to manage reminders for scheduled Spaces so you’ll be notified when they’re about to begin, and give Twitter feedback about which Spaces you’d like to see more of.”
In addition, the social media platform will also roll out another Twitter Spaces feature which displays Instagram Stories like purple-ring around users’ profile images to indicate that they are using Spaces. Followers can easily join their Spaces chat rooms by tapping on the illuminated profile icon.
The report explains that the feature is only rolled out to users who were part of Spaces beta testing and in the future will launch it globally. The company shared that it has planned more Twitter Spaces exclusive features like co-host events, accessibility improvements, paid events, and much more.
