unc0ver team has announced that it will release Substitute 2.0.0 with ‘unprecedented’ app loading speeds for unc0ver and checkra1n jailbreaks on iOS 11 – iOS 14. Substitute 2.0.0 is a tweak injection system which will reduce the processing overhead and allow for loading a larger number of tweaks to customize iOS, without a performance impact. Currently, these jailbreak tools use Substrate, which will be replaced by Substitute 2.0.0 soon.

This is great news for users who had been noticing that their iPhone or iPad performance was not up to the market after jailbreaking and installing a few tweaks. Customization tweaks usually take a considerable amount of memory which can impact the performance of the overall device, as well as reduce battery life. It will be interesting to see how much of an improvement Substitute 2.0.0 brings in real-world usage.
Just to clarify for those who might think that this is a new jailbreak tool and brings support for new iOS versions – it is not. It is simply an updated tweak injection system for jailbroken devices and will bring about performance improvements and memory savings. Because both checkra1n and unc0ver will support this Substrate 2.0.0, it means that users will theoretically be able to switch between both jailbreak tools without any issue.
