University of Kentucky is recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for its Smart Campus initiative

The University of Kentucky (UK) is recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2021- 2024 for its Smart Campus initiative and its incorporation of innovation in teaching, learning, research, and service. UK has over 30,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff members. The institute offers more than 200 academic programs from 16 degree-granting colleges, honors colleges, and graduate schools.

UK started an iPad initiative to provide students from different backgrounds with digital equity and inclusivity on their academic journey. The institute states that the iPad initiative enabled its students to smoothly transition to digital learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and becoming an Apple Distinguished School will “further enable it to pivot quickly to respond to an ever-changing, dynamic world.”

After the success of the iPad initiative, the UK states that its future goals will focus on expanding the incorporation of Apple technology in teaching creatively, building more iOS apps, promoting coding opportunities, and exploring ways to involve students more. The university’s vision statement reads:

The University of Kentucky’s goal is to become one of the country’s most innovative campuses. As a part of its wider Smart Campus strategy, the university provides all incoming degree-seeking, first-time undergraduate students with an iPad Air, Keyboard, and Apple Pencil. We want technology to help students learn and compete in the workforce for which they are preparing. UK wants the faculty to have the tools that match their expertise as educators, to integrate the use of technology across campus in a strategic and coordinated way. It’s an initiative aimed at improving learning, graduation rates, and leveling the technological playing field for students.
