Verbatim 1TB Store ‘N’ Go USB 2.0 Portable Hard drive [REVIEW]

Verbatim is the world’s most No.1 brand in optical media including CDs, DVDs and even the Blu-ray. They are known for providing media storage solutions of the highest quality and it sure stands true for this Verbatim 1TB Store ‘n’ Go USB 2.0 Portable Hard drive that I’ve been playing with for over a day now. I got this as a gift from a friend of mine and wasn’t really sure initially if it could perform on par with the other external hard drives I previously own from Western Digital. But I was wrong as this one does quite the opposite!

PACKAGE CONTENTS

This Verbatim 1TB USB 2.0 portable hard drive comes in a standard packaging. It contains 1 x Store ‘n’ Go USB hard drive, 1 x USB cable and a product manual. The power is supplied to the portable hard drive via a single mini USB 2.0 port at the top of the drive making it a true plug n play storage device. This is a big plus in terms of portability as most of the USB hard drives with similar capacity come with an external power cable which quite frankly, I personally do not approve.

DESIGN

This is a very lightweight USB 2.0 external storage device with nice scratch-resistant plastic chassis. It like its sleek looks and have found its curved silver plastic finish pleasingly robust. There is also a small blue LED at one corner to indicate drive activity

PERFORMANCE

The Verbatim Store ‘n’ Go Portable Hard Drive comes pre-formatted in FAT32 which allows you to use it on any Windows or Mac OS system right out of the box. It is also a very quiet drive and performs well on par with my other two Western Digital passport drives of 150Gb each. While there is no benchmark software to compare it with the other hard drives, my random copy, paste and formatting tests for both large and small files show it performs very efficiently, sometimes even outperforming the WD passport when copying single files over 20Gb.

For your hard drive data security, Nero BackItUp and Burn Essentials software is provided on the hard drive to help back up your PC’s hard drive. Unfortunately, this is of not much help if you are a Mac user like me since the software is only compatible with systems running Windows. However, you can always use Mac OS native Time Machine to backup up your hard drive on a Mac.

BOTTOM LINE

Verbatim 1TB Store ‘N’ Go is a solid and decent portable hard drive. Even though lack of Mac support for provided software is a minor let down but it will definitely make a good purchase for any one who backs up regularly.
