According to a new report, WhatsApp intends to drop support for iOS 10 and iOS 11 later this year. For iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c owners, the lack of support could push them to upgrade their devices. However, the company will continue supporting the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6s.
iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c will no longer be able to support WhatsApp later this year
According to WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform is now warning users with devices running iOS 10 or iOS 11 that they will need to update their devices to be able to use the platform. The company will effectively withdraw support for the older versions of iOS on October 24.
Update the latest version of iOS to continue using WhatsApp
WhatsApp will stop supporting this version of iOS after 24 Oct 2022. Please go to Settings> General, then tap Software Update to ge the latest iOS version.
The iPhone 5 and 5c run iOS 10 and iOS 11 which means that the supporting base for WhatsApp will soon be iOS 12. So, users who own an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6s can rest easy for now. For users with the older models, an upgrade might be on the horizon.
After WhatsApp drops support for the older versions of iOS, many WhatsApp features will not be available for iPhones running iOS 10 or iOS 11. Currently, it is unclear what those features will be. WhatsApp also regularly drops support for older versions of Android as well to ensure user safety and security.
While today’s report reveals that the company is dropping support for iOS 10 and iOS 11, we are a few weeks away from Apple unveiling iOS 16 at WWDC 22. According to industry reports, it is possible that iOS 16 will not support the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE. This means that this could be the next batch of iPhones to lose support for WhatsApp.
