WhatsApp has finally released new features on group chats: Reactions, up to 2GB file sharing, and up to 512 group members or participants. The company announced testing the aforementioned features, along with Communities last month.
Now, after receiving positive feedback, new features to improve the group chat experience on the platform are available to everyone.
As we announced last month with our vision for Communities on WhatsApp, we’re now building for organizations, businesses, and other close-knit groups to communicate securely and get things done on WhatsApp. The feedback we’ve received so far has been very positive and we can’t wait to get many new features into people’s hands.

New Reactions
Like on Facebook and iMessage, users on WhatsApp can react to messages quickly with an emoji. New “Reactions” emojis include heart, thanks, and thumbs up.
“Reactions are fun, fast, and they reduce overload in groups too. We’ll continue improving them by adding an even broader range of expressions in the future.”
Share up to 2GB files
WhatsApp has increased the limit of file size shared on the app from 100MB to 2GB with end-to-end encryption protection and a new counter to display the time remaining for the shared files’ upload or download.
The company believes that the bump in file size will allow businesses, schools, and other groups to collaborate. As per the announcement, users are recommended WiFi to send or receive larger files.
Add up to 512 people in groups
WhatsApp now allows users to add up to 512 people in a chat. The company said the ability to add more people to a group chat was one of the most requested features.
In the near future, the company is likely to release the new Communities feature on the app which will allow to combine or merge of similar groups under one umbrella group.
