WhatsApp multi-device 2.0 support on iPad and another iPhone is coming soon

Earlier it was discovered that WhatsApp is testing a new iPad app with multi-device 2.0 support which was expected to launch soon. Now, WABetaInfo has more evidence that solidifies the claim that the social media company is developing the capability to link iPad to users’ main device. The feature will be released on iOS and Android in an upcoming update.

WhatsApp launched a public beta program for its desktop app which is available for macOS and Windows. The multi-device beta program allows users to test features under development before they are released to the public. And WaBetaInfo found a screenshot on the WhatsApp Web app in beta testing that hints at support for a “second mobile device”.

WhatsApp multi-device support might include iPad and another iPhone

A “Downloading recent messages” screen, similar to WhatsApp Web screen in a multi-device beta program suggests that the service will be available on another mobile device. WABetaInfo writes:

When you open WhatsApp on the second mobile device after some time, WhatsApp will download all messages from the server and this does not require your main phone to be connected to the Internet.
When you link your second mobile device the first time, WhatsApp will sync the chat history: this process is obviously end-to-end encrypted.

Having said that, WABetaInfo is not sure if the support will be extended to iPads only or will also include iPhones. The feature is under development for iOS and Android devices but its release date is not known.

It’s not yet clear if WhatsApp will reserve this feature only for tablets (WhatsApp for iPad and Android tablets) or mobile phones are included, but there is no evidence that they will exclude mobile phones. Unfortunately, there isn’t a known release date for this feature.

The company recently released a new ‘group icon editor‘ and is working on new customizable ‘Last Seen‘ status.
