Apple TV set-top box or tvOS users have reported an unusual issue with the YouTube app. According to complaints on Reddit and Twitter, users are seeing a new dialogue or prompt appears when exiting the app on tvOS, and interaction with the prompt causes a black screen.
The YouTube app was updated to version 17.49.4 with bug fixes, and performance improvements on December 12. However, users started to experience exit issues the same day.
YouTube suggests re-installation of the app to frustrated tvOS users
Several users report that a new exit message appears on YouTube for the Apple TV app when they press the back button on Siri Remote to close the app or switch to another app. Choosing to exit the app results in an unresponsive black screen and the users are not directed to Apple TV Home Screen. The only fix is to force-close the app. @harleenmittal wrote on Twitter:
@TeamYouTube, hi the YouTube app on Apple TV is asking if we want to exit YouTube when we try to back out of the application using the menu button on the Apple Remote. When I tap on the exit button to confirm exiting, the screen goes black and is stuck.
Hey @YouTube your last app update for the AppleTV needs work. It now asks me if I want to exit(never did before). If I click exit, it just makes the screen turn black, it doesn’t actually exit out to the AppleTV Home Screen. I have to force quit the app every time.

I can’t normally exit the @YouTube app on my Apple TV anymore. There’s a new dialogue that asks if I want to quit the app. A positive answer leads to a black screen from which I can only force quit the app through the task manager. 🥴 #onlyGoogle

Hey @YouTube please get rid of the exit screen on your AppleTV app. It’s annoying and doesn’t work. It was not needed before and is not needed now.

Responding to users’ complaints, the company’s support team suggested they make sure that their app is updated to the latest version and relaunch it. The team also proposed that users delete the app and reinstall it.
can you also try uninstalling > reinstalling the app? or checking if it has new updates?

However, none of the workarounds appear to be working but the company said that it would be working on a resolution.

Previously, the app was updated with a lively new design and features like precise seeking and more to deliver a modern and immersive viewing experience across platforms and increased the price of the Premium family plan which is higher on iOS at $29.99 per month but cheaper on the web because it circumvents App Store’s commission for all in-app purchases.
